Abstract
Sixty-four patients with histologically confirmed stage I seminoma of the testis were treated by radiotherapy at the Okmeydanı Hospital from 1983 to 1987. Of the patients 64, twenty-eight were treated by ipsilateral pelvic and paraaortic irradiation alone and thirty-six were treated by both infradiaphragmatic and proplylactic mediastinal irradiation. Fifty-five patients remain disease-free, nine patients failed and seven patients died of widespread disease. Median period for recurrence was 20 months. The failure rate who were treated by infradiaphragmatic irradiation alone and prophylactic mediastinal irradiation alone were 7.1 percent and 19.4 percent. Disease-free survival was 92.9 % versus 86.2 and there was no statistically significant difference among two groups. We concluded that ipsilateral pelvic and paraaortic irradiation alone is an effective and safe method in stage I seminoma.
