MANAGEMENT WITH COMBINED MODALITY TREATMENT OF LOCALLY ADVANCED NON METASTATIC (PATOLOGIC STAGE IV) SUPRAGLOTTIC LARYNGEAL CANCER

Abstract
This is a report of a group of 65 patients with stage IV supraglottic carcinomas treated by radical surgery and postoperative radiotherapy at the University Hospital of İstanbul University between the years of 1980-1985. All patients had pathologic stage IV cancer and included in the study. Eighty three percent of the patients had total, %17 had partial laryngectomy. For the neck disease, forty patients had ipsilateral, fourteen patients had bilateral neck dissection. Eleven patients did not get neck dissection since there was not palpable lymph node in the neck at the time of diagnosis. Seventeen percent of the patients developed local recurrences, eleventh percent developed distant metastases and five percent developed second primary malignancy within the follow-up period. Thirty seven percent of the patients were lost within the follow-up period. At five years, absolute survival rate was 38% for the entire group.
