THE RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF 35 PATIENTS WITH EWING SARCOMA: GATA EXPERIENCE

Ewing sarcomas are rare tumors and their natural history and response to therapy differ from the other bone tumors. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy and sometimes surgery are combined in the treatment. Long term survival can be achieved by intensive chemotherapy protocols even in the metastatic cases. We reviewed the results of 35 patients treated between 1985-1996. The most common site of presentation was femur with 7 cases (20%). Six patients (17%) were extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma. Six out of 35 patients (17%) were metastatic at diagnosis. Chemotherapy was given in all of cases 44-52 Gy radiotherapy was also used all of localized cases (n=29). Surgical excision was performed in 12 out of 29 localized cases. The median follow-up was 13 months and the overall survival rates at 2nd year and 3rd year were 58% and 32% respectively. Median survival was 28 -months. The univariate analysis showed that there was no significant relationship between overall survival and stage of disease, type of surgery and site of involvement.
