CONVENTIONAL PROGNOSTIC PARAMETERS IN MALIGNANT OVARIAN SURFACE EPITHELIAL TUMORS AND RELATION OF PATIENT SURVIVAL TO P53 TUMOR SUPPRESSOR GENE

We collected the data of 60 patients diagnosed as malignant ovarian surface carcinoma at the Department of Pathology in Izmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital between 1993-1997. All the cases were evaluated for the conventional parameters such as histologic type, differentiation, stage, tumor size and for the presence of p53 tumor suppressor gene. Furthermore, in 32 patients that could be clinically followed, the relation between p53 tumor suppressor gene existance and survival time was also investigated. In this study, we have demonstrated the overexpression of p53 protein in epithelial ovarian cancers in 20 (33%) of 60 patients but the results were found statistically insignificant. We found that 80% (16/20) of immunohistochemically positive p53 tumors were serous tumors and 50% (10/20) of these immunohistochemically positive p53 cases were poorly differentiated tumors and 70% (14/20) immunohistochemically positive were stage III-IV tumors.
