POSTOPERATIVE RADIOTHERAPY RESULTS OF 79 CASES WITH DIAGNOSES OF STAGE I SEMINOMA

Postoperative radiotherapy is generally accepted as a standart treatment for early stage testicular seminoma. In the present study 79 patients with stage I seminoma who received radiotherapy between 1987 and 1997 were evaluated retrospectively. Median age was 37. The most common histologic type was classic seminoma (94.9%). Inguinal orchiectomy was performed in 93.7% of the cases and scrotal orchiectomy in 6.3%. Radiotherapy was delivered through paraaortic plus ipsilateral pelvic fields in patients with inguinal orchiectomy and through paraaortic plus bilateral pelvic fields in patients with scrotal orchiectomy with daily fractions of 1.8 Gy to a total dose of 27-38 Gy. Median follow-up duration was 36 months (range 14-136 months). Five-year local control and overall survival rates were 100%. Gastrointestinal toxicity was the most common acute toxicity (21.8%). Hematological toxicity was observed in 7.7% of the patients. None of the patients developed late toxicity. In conclusion radiotherapy is effective providing high cure rates and low toxicty in the treatment of stage I seminoma.
