EXTERNAL AUDITORY CANAL EPIDERMOID CARCINOMA, A CASE REPORT

The most often malignancies of the external auditory canal are cutaneous tumors. Solar exposure, otorrhea, chronic eczema, chronic dermatologic conditions and chronic ulserations from trauma are the major predisposing factors. Basal cell carcinomas and epidermoid carcinomas are the most common histopathological types. Early stage tumors (T1-T2, NO) are treated with limited surgery or radiotherapy but advanced lesions are managed with a combination of irradiation and surgery. This is a case of a 64 year-old man who had a left external auditory canal epidermoid carcinoma treated with primary radiotherapy with a dose of 62 Gy. Tumoural lesion was totally regressed after radiotherapy. Regarding the results in the literature and the result of this case, we agree that primary radiotherapy is the alternative of surgery in the treatment of early stage external auditory canal epidermoid carcinomas, however advanced lesions should be managed with a combination of irradiation and surgery for the best treatment results.
