TOPOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF BONY METASTASES IN BREAST CARCINOMA

Abstract
We reviewed retrospectively 173 female breast cancer patients with 380 metastatic bone lesions at different areas which were diagnosed first visit or follow-up between January 1997 and December 2002, at University of Eskişehir Osmangazi, Department of Nuclear Medicine.


The lesions were classified solitary or multiple, based on bone scan results and then according to anatomical distribution. The sites of involvement in whole group are cranium 11%, rib-sternum- scapula 29%, vertebrae 29%, pelvis 17%, upper extremities 1% and lower extremities 13%. The vertebrae and rib-sternum-scapula regions were a frequent site for solitary and multiple skeletal metastases.


Thoracic and lumbar vertebral skeletal sites (77%) (150/194) were most frequent in patients with vertebral metastasis (χ2=58.660, df=3, p<0.001). Rib metastasis were most frequent in ribsternum- scapula skeletal region (54%) (86/158) (χ2=86.101, df=3, p<0.001).


Bone metastasis has a different distributions ratio in six main anatomical part of skeletal system in breast cancer. Thoracolumbar vertebral sites need to special attention for follow up avoiding for metastatic complications.
