THE EXPERIENCE OF IU. INSTITUTE OF ONCOLOGY FOR EPIDERMOID AND BASAL CELL SKIN CANCERS: RETROSPECTIVE ANALYZED OF 401 PATIENTS

Abstract
In this study clinic parameters of 401 basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers of the patients which were treated at IU. Institute of Oncology between 1990-1995 were analyzed retrospectively and treatment results were reported. The records of 401 patients having 455 lesions were analyzed, 234 (%51) basal cell carcinomas, 209 squamous cell carcinomas and 12 baso-squamous carcinomas were treated. 356 of 455 (%78) lesions were primary (previously untreated) lesions and 99 lesions were recurrent tumours. AJCC-1997 staging system criteria was used for staging and the patients were followed up mean of 45 months after treatment. The overall local and regional recurrence rate was 3.4% (12/356) for previously untreated lesions and 30% (30/99) for recurrent lesions. After salvage treatments with reoperation or reirradiation of recurred tumors, the overall local tumor control rate of whole group and 5-year survival rate were 94%. However no patients with distant metastases were cured. 29 (7%) patients were died for progression and distant metastases of skin cancers in the whole group. Conclusions; radiotherapy remains an excellent treatment modality for epithelial skin cancer; however control rate diminishes with recurrent lesions. The results of this study have correlates well with literatures results.
