Abstract
In the 10 year period from 1 January 1976 till 31 December 1985, 51 patients, 30 males and 21 females, with the diagnosis of medulloblastoma were treated and followed up at our department. The age of the patients ranged between 2 and 40 years with a median of 9 years. All patients were irradiated post operatively either after macroscopic total surgical excision in 16 (%31) or after subtotal excision in 35 (% 69). Radiotherapy programme consisted of a craniospinal irradiation of 3000 cGy, followed by 1000 cGy to the middle and posterior fossa and terminated by an additional dose of 500-2000 cGy to the posterior fossa. The whole treatment was delivered over 6-7.5 weeks in conventional fractionation utilizing a Cobalt - 60 teletherapy unit. Twenty of pediatric patients received a chemotherapy regimen of VCR, CCNU, and Prednisolone for a year period starting simultaneously with radiotherapy. The actuarial 5 and 10 year survival rates obtained are 48 % and 44 % respectively. From the analysis made, it seems that factors of age, sex and type of primary surgical intervention (Macroscopic total - Subtotal) have no influence on prognosis.
