RADIOTHERAPY IN KASABACH-MERRITT SYNDROME: CASE REPORT

A male infant with a 1x3 cm reddish lesion under his umbilicus at birth which enlarged within a month was diagnosed as Kasabach-Merritt Syndrome (KMS). After no response to prednisolon and interferon alfa treatment, 8 Gy of radiotherapy (2 Gy/day) was applied during the fourth month after birth. The clinical status improved and the lesion decreased by 95%. This case illustrates the potential use of radiotherapy (RT) in the management of KMS. Radiotherapy as an easily applicable and an inexpensive treatment modality may be considered for lesions that have failed to respond other treatment modalities.
