BENIGN GIANT CELL TUMOR OF BONE WITH PULMONARY METASTASIS: CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

Benign giant cell tumor of bone is an interesting neoplasia with spontaneous or radiation induced malign transformation and lung metastasis. In the last years, cytogenetic analyses revealed these characteristics of the tumor to a certain extent: Telomeric associations, clonal caryotypic anomalies played a role in malignant transformation, and c-myc overexpression in lung metastases. The definitive treatment of primary tumor and lung metastases is surgery in benign giant cell tumor of bone. If total excision is not possible megavoltage radiotherapy can also be applied. Our patient was treated with desarticulation after 3 local recurrences and wedge resections of pulmonary metastates. He is disease-free after 13 years follow up.
