MAXILLARY SINUS OSTEOSARCOMA

Sarcomas are malignant tumors derived from cells of mesenchymal origin that are rarely seen at the head and neck region, accounting for 4 -10% of all sarcomas. Osteosarcomas account for 0.5-1% of all tumors occurring in nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. These tumors are generally high grade, have a different pattern of recurrence from the similar tumors elsewhere in the body and a very high incidence of local recurrence so appropriate treatment is still controversial.

Here we report a 22-year old male with right maxillary sinus osteosarcoma. After the maxillectomy, postoperative 60 Gy external radiotherapy applied to tumor localization. Then five cycles of chemotherapy consisting of cisplatin, adriamycin and ifosphamid was applied.. He is still alive for three years with no evidence of disease.
