Abstract
Of the 535 cases originally diagnosed as Hodgkin's disease (HD) in Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty Department of Pathology from 1970 to 1986, 485 were histologically re-examined and reclassified. After re-examination 467 cases were regarded to be HD. Of these cases, 315 were males and 152 were females with a male/female ratio 2:1.22.5 %of the total cases were in the pediatric age group (0-14 years). The overall crude incidence rate was 2.1 for males and 1.0 for females. The age-specific incidence curve of HD was bimodal in both sexes with the first peak in the 30-39 age group. Mixed cellularity was the most common histologic type (59.2% in males and 53.9% in females). Its age-specific incidence curve was bimodal with the first peak in the 30-39 age group. The second peak was much higher than the first one. Mixed cellularity was followed by nodular sclerosis (19.5% of the total) which showed a higher percentage (33.8%) in 15-35 age group in females. Lymphocytic depletion type had the highest incidence rate in older ages. In conclusion, the epidemiologic features of HD in Istanbul, Turkey are consistent with Type 2 disease of Correa and O'Conor.
