Stereotactic radiotherapy results of menengiomas with a CyberKnife: a single center experience

Abstract
OBJECTIVES

Menengiomas constitute 13-26% of cranial tumors. Surgical
resection, external raiotherapy, and stereotactic radiotherapy/
radiosurgery (SRT) are the various treatment options. The aim
of this study is to evaluate the effectivity and toxicity profiles
of stereotactic radiotherapy in menengiomas using a CyberKnife
(Accuray Incorporated, Sunnyvale, CA, USA).


METHODS

Stereotactic radiotherapy was applied to 28 patients with
menengiomas between January 2009 and January 2012. The patients
were administered an average dose of 20 (15-25) Gy with
a CyberKnife machine using an average of 3 (1-5) fractions.


RESULTS

Stereotactic radiotherapy was applied to 12 patients for primary
treatment, 6 patients for residual tumors, and 10 patients for recurrent
tumors. The median follow-up duration after SRT was
24 (12-40) months. Radiological follow up was obtained in
partial response (12 patients), stable response (15 patients) and
progressive response (1 patient). The local control was 96%.


CONCLUSION

The results show that stereotactic radiotherapy with a CyberKnife
is a highly effective and safe treatment option in
menengiomas. SRT is especially more effective for small volume
tumors.
